Public Space Performance/Action Interventions,

sharing space and process with Dagmar Glausnitzer-Smith

New York Live Art Tour 8, Immersive

14 September 2023

Arriving in Manhattan via bus from Montreal, I had a few days to familiarise myself with the place before Dagmar Glausnitzer-Smith landed from Germany. We had been sharing a performance/action diary practice since March 2023 from afar, using the public space in our immediate surroundings whether it be in homes (for Dagmar in Braunschweig, Germany and for me, in the Blue Mountains NSW Australia), often through the act of walking over a 4 to 6 hour period, or through a compulsion as we navigated everyday living. New York Live Art Tour 8, Immersive was an event that we could extend and apply our sharing. We are collating a book-form publication of our works which eventuated during this period but for the purpose of my website, I will be focusing on images of what I did.

The image series of performance/actions below emerged out of a 6 hour walking phenomenon which began as an impulse after emerging from an American Diner on 7th Ave. We would follow the compulsion to ‘act’ when we chanced upon a public scene, street corner or building. Acting as each other’s invigilator, documenter or witness.

Above are images of a 20-minute Action: Measuring the perimeter of a NY Police Barrier with the side of my neck. Location: 7th Ave/W 34th Street.

Below are images of a 10-minute action: Taking time to remove and put on green blouse in as many ways as possible. Permission was asked of security to perform this action in the foyer but the penthouse manager refused. This action took place in the liminal area where people were opening the doors regularly to enter and exit the building. Location: 11 Penn Street.

Below are images of a 10-minute action: Taking time to slowly exit and enter through a set of revolving doors. Permission was asked of security to perform this action in the foyer but was again, denied. This action also took place in the liminal area where people were entering and exiting the building through the revolving doors. Location: 208 West 34th Street.
